Motivational differences in unipolar and bipolar depression, manic bipolar, acute and stable phase schizophrenia

: Motivational anhedonia has been observed in patients with a wide range of mental disorders. However, the similarity and uniqueness this deficit across diagnostic groups not thoroughly investigated. The study compared motivational deficits 37 major depressive disorder (MDD), 32 bipolar depression, 33 manic (BD), 30 acute phase stable schizophrenia, as well 47 healthy controls. Participants were administered Effort-Expenditure for Reward Task which measures allocation effort between high-effort low-effort task monetary rewards at varying magnitudes probabilities. Compared controls, BD manic, schizophrenia significantly less likely to choose high reward magnitude condition. probability Acute made estimated value Bipolar excessive low but value. Contrary expectations, both unipolar depression did differ from controls magnitude, probability, conditions. Anhedonia negative symptoms associated fewer choices patients. Motivation showed distinct patterns psychiatric patients: was most severely affected, mania similar depression.
